Wellness of the System Paper Assignment

Q Wellness of a system 1 WELLNESS OF THE SYSTEM PAPER INSTRUCTIONS OVERVIEW In more recent years, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) has recognized that Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs), like all helping professions, are at a higher risk for burnout and vicarious trauma. The purpose of the Wellness of the System paper is to: • Provide practice at selecting appropriate resources from the Jerry Falwell Library • Articulate your understanding of burn out and/or vicarious trauma and MFTs • Assessment of your System’s wellness • Create a Self Care Plan to increase or maintain healthy wellness of your System. • Incorporate feedback provided in previous assignments Be sure to review all steps Step 1: Read the assigned textbook readings up to and including this week. Step 2: Conduct a search for and select two journal articles in the Jerry Falwell Online Library 1. Open the link, in the search bar select Articles and type in one or both of the following terms a. MFT and Vicarious Trauma b. MFT and Burnout 2. Before searching, select the following boxes a. Online Full Text PDF b. Scholarly/Peer Reviewed Step 3: Utilizing Figure 8.3 and Box 8.6 from the textbook, sketch a genogram of your family to include three generations (this can be two prior to you, or one prior and one after; this is based on your life and can include adopted family). This sketch will be for your purposes only, and will not be submitted. Step 4: Complete the following assessments: (for purposes of the paper, will not be submitted) 1. Stress Reactions Inventory 2. Self Care Life Pie Chart Step 5: Note your System’s areas of strength in wellness and areas in need of growth. Review your genogram. Are strengths in wellness shared by other family members? Are areas of growth shared by members of the family system? Are there patterns of wellness or neglect of wellness in your family system? Step 6: Review feedback from your instructor on previous assignments. Step 7: Write a 2-3 page paper. The paper must be in current APA format (including running head, a title page, and reference page). The paper as in all essay work needs to include an Introduction and Conclusion and must utilize three sources. Note: the title page and reference page do not contribute toward the page requirement. (Make sure to incorporate feedback, adjust and correct errors noted by your instructor in the previous paper). Divide your paper into the following sections and headings: • Introduction • MFT Stressors o Define vicarious trauma and burnout and impact on Marriage and Family Therapists (What is burnout/vicarious trauma for MFTs?) o Section should be no more than one page, cite at least two peer reviewed/scholarly sources. • Assessment of Wellness o Identify your wellness strengths and growth areas based on the assessments. o Identify patterns of similarity of strengths and areas of growth within your family system. (Do you share focus on one item well? Do family members neglect certain aspects of wellness, same as you?) o Section should be no more than one page, support with specifics from the assessment results and the genogram sketch reviewed, do not submit the assessments or genogram • Self Care Plan o Create a plan to maintain strengths and improve areas in need, include two goals: be specific yet realistic. o Explore benefits or limitations of inclusion of members in the plan to improve and maintain wellness. o Discuss how self care and wellness fits into a Christian World View (cite Scripture to support this section) o Section should be no more than one page • Conclusion Step 7: Save your paper as a Microsoft Word document using your name and assignment title (e.g., Doe_J_WellnessSystem). Step 8: Submit your final assignment by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday of Module/Week 5 using the assignment link

Introduction Society remains peaceful and healthy when the family, its basic unit, remains intact and productive in all aspects. In order to ensure that all the challenges associated with marriage are carefully addressed, marriage and family therapists play a leading role in guiding couples, especially those undergoing marital challenges. However, this process is not easy, and some of the MFTs experience burnout and vicarious trauma. Even though the MFTs play a crucial role in assisting couples undergoing marital struggles, they equally experience challenges, hence the inevitable need for a practical and effective self-care plan.
